Overview

Media Relations is a specific endeavour within an overall Public Relations strategy. Experts in MR are required to understand and deal with the increasingly complicated news media sector, characterised by the 24-hour rolling agenda. Our one week training course entitled Media Relations explains how media works and how to benefit from effective relations with media. Lessons explore who is who in the news structure explaining the roles of reporters, editors, desk journalists and specialist correspondents and how to successfully pitch stories to them. The curriculum covers how to become an expert in gauging how important a story might be to the media and what is required to gain a reputation as a dependable source of information for reporters. Also included in the schedule are the differences between a press briefing and press conference, how to avoid common pitfalls such as ‘off the record’ comments, as well as tips on planning a successful press conference and giving winning interviews.
